Hire option reduces ammonia at Leeds WTWs 24 February 2022

Te-Tech’s te-saf submerged aerated filter has solved a problem at Southern Water’s Leeds wastewater treatment works in Kent. The sites treats wastewater from the surrounding villages and from the popular tourist attraction Leeds Castle.

When a new and tighter nitrate consent was introduced to protect the environmentally sensitive River Len, Southern Water’s framework contractor BTU approached Te-Tech Process Solutions.

Te-Tech was able to offer a te-saf unit for immediate deployment on a hire contract while Southern Water engineered a permanent solution. With logistics and cranage coordinated, the plant was installed and ready to go within hours of arrival on-site, together with its self-contained, portable control skid which houses the blowers and control system. In a matter of a few days, the te-saf was achieving 70% reduction in ammonia, improving the site’s compliance.

The te-saf process reduces BOD (biological oxygen demand), suspended solids and ammonia. It is said to be able to be utilised as a roughing filter in the carbonaceous or nitrification stage of the wastewater treatment process.

According to the company, the packaged te-saf structured media is contained in steel cages to allow easy removal without draining the tank down and the aeration system air diffusers can be retracted from access hatches on the side of the units at ground level.

These units are said to be suitable for plant upgrades or treatment at smaller sites on a permanent or temporary basis.
