Fake plant and spares risk lives of workers, warns CraneHireUK19 March 2014

Plant managers are being warned to watch for counterfeit cranes following Terex's discovery of its cranes being built and sold by counterfeiters.

Plant hire specialist CraneHireUK.co.uk says that, while the fake equipment has mostly been found in the Far East and South Asia, it is only a matter of time before examples crop up in Britain alongside counterfeit spare parts.

Terex says that its CC2500-1 lattice boom crawler crane has been copied by a factory in China, and knows of at least 10 examples being passed off as genuine Terex plant.

"Fake parts are already a problem in the construction and transport industries," comments Mark Hall of CraneHireUK.co.uk.

"We've now got to be on the lookout for counterfeit plant arriving in the UK."

CraneHireUK.co.uk, which guarantees that its fleet of cranes and lifting vehicles are the genuine article, is even more concerned with spare parts counterfeiting.

"The fake cranes are just the tip of the iceberg," says Hall, "The real damage to the industry's reputation is a tidal wave of low quality fake spare parts that put the safety of site workers at risk."

According to a spate of studies, including one by the European Union's Committee for European Construction Equipment, copied parts not only cost industry money but threaten the health of users.
