Emerson integrates UPS with AMS suite asset management 25 January 2013
Emerson Network Power's industrial uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) now generate self-diagnostic data for parent company Emerson's AMS Suite asset management system.
The development means that critical industrial power systems are now doubly protected, through continuous monitoring of critical systems for predictive maintenance in process industry plants, offshore facilities, oil and gas terminals and power plants.
David Vasselin, vice president of business development at Emerson Network Power's Chloride Industrial Power business, explains that, with continuous visibility of the UPS performance, plant managers can prevent downtime from component wear or failure.
"UPS systems are extremely durable – built to back up industrial power systems reliably for up to 60 years," comments Vasselin.
"Plant maintenance personnel feel very secure about these systems and don't get much chance to practice troubleshooting or making repairs," he continues.
"However, our AMS Device Manager keeps track of the UPS for them and issues alerts with step-by-step guidance on how to solve the issue. This adds another layer of value to these backup power supplies."
The Emerson system provides information on UPS performance via the Profibus DP fieldbus protocol to a plant's distributed control system.
