Birmingham school project turns to Potterton condensing boilers 19 August 2013
Holyhead School, in Handsworth, Birmingham, has replaced ageing and obsolete boilers with Potterton Commercial condensing boilers, matched to the original radiator installation, and the flow and return water temperatures.
The Business and Enterprise Academy, formed in 2011 from the previous comprehensive school in Handsworth, needed efficient space heating and domestic hot water but in line with its initiative to minimise both carbon footprint and running costs.
Three Potterton Commercial Eurocondense 500kW condensing boilers and three 800 litre calorifiers were selected by consulting engineers for Dodd Group with specialist input from Baxi Commercial Division.
Alll boilers and calorifiers were installed in the ground floor plant room, with only pipework in that needing to be replaced.
"It was a nice large plant room with no access issues," comments a spokesperson for Dodd Group. "There are classrooms backing onto it but this did not prove to be problematic as the new boilers were much quieter than those they replaced."
The three new boilers operate with stand-alone controls and are not connected to a BMS (building management sytem). The calorifiers provide domestic hot water throughout the school, serving wash hand basins, sinks and showers.
