Automation is helping the UK manufacturing industry recover from a range of external shocks, including Brexit, Covid-19 and the war in Ukraine.

This is one of the key takeaways delivered by Gambica’s sector head for industrial automation Nikesh Mistry at the First Friday Club Editors' Briefing in London.

“Automation has been the answer to the pandemic,” he said. “Overnight a lot of people realised they needed to be able to do remote machine maintenance and used predictive maintenance to foresee any problems that they may not be on-site to see.”

During this period, Gambica hosted webinars in which member companies looked at the ways in which they could use artificial intelligence to understand how they may be able to achieve better energy monitoring.

In order to achieve the most success, Mistry emphasised that organisations must recognise each technology for the problems that it solves. “Don't use automation for automation's sake; use it the best technology for each problem. Our industry is very good at having the right technology, whether its variable speed drives or different energy saving equipment that can help to achieve efficiency and increase productivity.”
