ABB wins metals plant orders worth $29 million in Germany 04 July 2011

ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe is to modernise the No 1 seven-stand hot strip rolling mill at its Duisburg-Bruckhausen steel plant in Germany, using ABB automation for drives, drives power systems and equipment.

ThyssenKrupp operates four hot strip mills, with a total annual capacity of around 15 million tonnes. After the modernisation, the company says it will produce lightweight steel for the automotive industry, material for recyclable tin cans, and steel for oil and gas pipelines. It will also start producing electrical steel for wind turbines and hybrid engines.

ABB's scope of supply includes electrical equipment, such as main transformers, synchronous motors (11MW, 8.5MW and 1.5MW) and corresponding MV converters.

The automation giant will also provide auxiliary drives, low voltage switchgear and drives automation based on its AC800PEC controller for rolling mill applications – as well as related engineering, commissioning, site services and training.

"This project is a continuation of our successful history and ongoing working relationship with ThyssenKrupp," comments Veli-Matti Reinikkala, head of ABB's process automation division. "We are committed to providing the proven technical solutions, services and support to make this modernisation project reach the customer's new production and efficiency goals."
