BFPA publishes new fluid injection injury guidelines 06 February 2013

A new guideline document addressing the issue of hydraulic fluid injection injury has been launched by the British Fluid Power Association (BFPA).

The pocket-sized booklet – titled 'Fluid Injection Injury Emergency – The Facts' – is the latest publication from the association as part of its campaign to raise awareness of health and safety in the fluid power industry.

Key themes covered include: people most at risk, symptoms, treatment and outcome.

"Fluid power injection injuries thankfully remain rare," comments BFPA director Ian Morris. "Yet, when they do occur they can have a devastating effect on the health and wellbeing of the injured party, as well as bringing into question the safety regime of his/her employer."

Morris says that such instances also compromise the reputation of the fluid power industry, which "continues to sustain a high reputation for good health and safety practice".

The book makes the point that a fluid injection injury, if not treated properly and quickly, can have serious consequences, resulting in permanent loss of movement in limbs, and in some cases even the loss of a limb.

The fluid power industry often works at high pressures, but injection injuries can occur at pressures as low as 7 bar. Hence, many industrial processes, including water jetting, carry a risk.

The subject of hydraulic fluid injection injury is already covered in existing BFPA training courses, but Morris says that, given the potential serious nature of this topic, the new publication is warranted.

'Fluid Injection Injury Emergency – The Facts' is priced at £3.10 for BFPA/BFPDA members and £6.25 for non-members.
