World first wireless guided wave radar level transmitter 27 June 2013
The industry's first true wireless guided wave radar (GWR) transmitter for continuous level and interface monitoring has been unveiled by Emerson Process Management.
Dubbed Rosemount 3308, it has been introduced to provide for accurate monitoring in remote or difficult to access locations where installing new cabling would be costly or impractical.
GWR transmitters are already widely used for a range of applications, such as vessel and storage tank level measurement and control in refineries, offshore platforms and chemical plants.
Adding Emerson's smart wireless technology significantly reduces installation and configuration time and cost, since there is no need for cabling, trenching, conduit runs and cable trays.
Emerson claims that costs are typically reduced by 30% or more.
Once a wireless network has been established, any IEC 62591 WirelessHART enabled device can join the network, also making it relatively simple to make changes or move devices around.
Based on GWR technology, the Rosemount 3308 is a top-mounted device, and is virtually unaffected by changing process conditions such as density, conductivity, temperature and pressure.
Further, Emerson makes the point that, because there are no moving parts, no calibration is required and maintenance is minimised.
