Viridor cleans up health, safety and environmental management 06 March 2014

Recycling, renewable energy and waste management giant Viridor is reporting improvements in the provision of health and safety as well as environmental expertise for its compliance team, following advice from legal consultancy Cedrec.

Viridor regulatory and policy advisor Petra Stapp says that upgrading its legislation register with support from Cedrec has enabled the firm to record amendments to legislation in a way that can be understood by those with responsibility for ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.

"The system we used previously was far too text heavy, cumbersome and difficult-to- use," she says.

"We have seen a huge difference since bringing onboard Cedrec, whose ability to provide easy-to-understand, digestible interpretation and analysis of complex and technical legislation is without parallel and means we are fully compliant with legal requirements," she continues.

"The summaries and subtext breakdowns they provide are clear, well indexed and up-to-date – and can, if necessary, be expanded by the user to reveal more detail and analysis," she explains.

"All this ensures that teams are now more aware of the legislation and better armed with the right advice that can be applied in their day-to-day work."

Stapp also rates the proactive advice available from Cedrec, which, she says, enables Viridor to stay a step ahead of the statutory landscape and contributes to its legal compliance.

She cites ACOP guidance surrounding the COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health).

"Cedrec's ACOP advice is very good, explaining how changes will impact on our business, how we must comply and the consequences of doing so," she states.

"We recently contacted them for advice on legal issues surrounding the transportation of hazardous materials. They were extremely responsive, replying very quickly with a comprehensive summary, which included a number of sections personally marked-up to highlight some critical factors."
