German-based furniture manufacturer Venjakob has relied on two automated guided vehicles (AGV) from Ek Robotics to make its intralogistics future-proof.

Venjakob manufactures furniture in a range of shapes and sizes – a challenge for in-house material transport due to the variety of loads. At the same time, narrow routes require precise navigation of the transport vehicles. A solution therefore had to be both flexible and space-saving. The choice fell on a customised AGV with two vehicles of the Vario Move series from Ek Robotics. These transport robots are equipped with extended forks, sensors to detect the width and length of the load and a duplex lift mast. This enables them to transport loads of up to 1,000 kg and store them at heights of up to four meters. A sophisticated safety concept with personal protection laser scanners, acoustic and visual signals is said to enable safe operation – even in areas without a clear overview.

"Our employees can now concentrate more on value-adding activities while the AGV takes over the material flow," explained Fabian Terpelle, project manager at Venjakob. An additional advantage: Thanks to the training at the ek Academy, the company can make adjustments to the system independently and continuously develop it further.

The pilot project shows that driverless transport systems not only play a key role in industry, but also in production environments characterised by craftsmanship. Venjakob is already planning to expand the system to other production areas in order to exploit additional automation potential.
