TÜV SÜD launches machinery SIL certification service 08 April 2014

TÜV SÜD Product Service has launched a UK-based SIL (Safety Integrity Level) certification service.

Paul Laidler, the firm's business director for machinery safety, says it's aimed at manufacturers of safety-related controls wanting to assure purchasers that their product functions comply with the required performance levels.

The initial phase of the new service includes a gap analysis process to ascertain if the safety component will achieve the required SIL or performance level, or if other measures must be taken.

This, says Laidler, will minimise the certification process, saving l manufacturers costs and reducing time to market for new products.

"If a safety related control function does not have the required integrity, it may fail unexpectedly and the machine will lose function, or worse, injure an operator," warns Laidler.

"Any claim of functional safety for a component, subsystem or system should therefore be independently certified to one of the recognized functional safety standards," he continues.

"Our new certification service will help manufacturers to assure customers that their safety control system will reduce the risk to the required level once installed."
