Thermal fluid specialist urges uptake of food-grade oil 05 February 2013
Thermal oil specialist Global Heat Transfer is calling for the food and pharmaceutical industries to ensure that they are using compliant food-grade (FG) thermal fluids in heat transfer applications.
The company believes that, although the use of FG fluids is a regulatory requirement imposed by several bodies including the FDA and NSF, it is one that many manufacturers are unaware of.
"If there is any possibility that an oil or lubricant could come into contact with food products, a certified FG fluid must be used to safeguard consumer health," its spokesperson explains.
"Failure to use FG oil in a food application can result in the loss of the manufacturer's top tier accreditation, if the EFSIS [European Food Safety Inspection Service] learns that an inappropriate product is being used," he adds.
FG oil is designed not to contaminate food so, should a minor spillage occur, there is no need for products to be recalled.
Furthermore, Globaltherm FG (made from a mix of pure heat transfer hydrocracked base oils) is claimed to perform better than non-FG products in food plant applications, because it maintains carbon in suspension rather than depositing it – so reducing carbon build up.
