Thermal fluid heaters keep Total UK bitumen flowing 01 September 2014

Total UK has installed two Babcock Wanson high-efficiency thermal fluid heaters at its Preston-based Bitumen division in a bid to improve operating costs and cut emissions.

The new EPC ES thermal fluid heaters are being used to heat the bitumen to a constant 180°C to maintain its pumpability.

The fluid heaters are fully automatic coil type, multi-pass units, chosen because they provide optimal heat distribution, high fluid velocity in the exchange tubes and continuous flow monitoring to ensure long fluid life and safety.

The EPC heaters also match fuel input to plant energy requirements and include economisers for maximum operating efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Duncan McLeod, engineering manager at Total Bitumen Preston, says key benefits already reaped include a reduction in fuel costs and stack emissions, greater efficiency and a move to natural gas instead of heavy fuel – which has removed the need for onsite fuel storage.
