Spirax Sarco opens steam training technology centre 03 November 2011

Spirax Sarco's new UK steam technology centre, now officially opened, is the only training facility of its kind with a fully-operational steam system, including SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition).

The revamped centre offers a variety of training courses to help plant engineers and technicians improve energy efficiency and carbon emissions – as well as reduce steam plant downtime and operating costs.

Roger Glassonbury, customer training manager at Spirax Sarco, explains that the training rig also showcases modern approaches to process control, energy efficiency and carbon impact – as well as the latest steam to hot water technology.

SCADA linked systems allow delegates to observe all aspects of the boiler house and steam system design in real time, he says.

"This major refurbishment of the UK centre reflects our latest capabilities and our customer's future needs," states Glassonbury.

And he continues: "Properly trained staff can add real benefit to a company's bottom line, as they are more aware of the energy saving and environmental aspects of steam plant, as well as learning how to do the job safely and gaining new skills."

Commenting on publication of the new Guidance on the Safe Operation of Boilers (BG01), he adds: "Safety is obviously the main driver, but proper training can also save money for boiler owners and operators.

"Properly operated steam boilers provide a safe and efficient way of moving energy around. Complying with the new advice will not only improve the safety of boiler operations, but knowing the best ways to operate and maintain a steam system is the key to improving efficiency, boosting productivity and reducing costs."

Drafted by the CEA, SAFed and the HSE, the new guidance advises that boiler operators and managers achieve the national industry standards from training providers like Spirax Sarco.

The new document recommends Certified Industrial Boiler Operator (CertIBO) status for operators and Diploma in Boiler Plant Operation Management (DipBOM) for managers, both of which are covered in the Spirax Sarco Boiler Operation Accreditation Scheme (BOAS) training course.
