Spill prevention and containment – a better way 17 June 2013
The British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) and Environment Agency (EA) have published a report, entitled 'Best Practice in Spill Prevention in the Waste Management Industry' – echoing the recent call to action from the Waste Industry Safety and Health (WISH) forum.
Their report reflects the experience of 23 waste management industry figures, openly discussing the problems they have with spills on and off site. The most common spills mentioned included those as a result of moving oil and diesel, leachate, chemical spills and fire water run-off.
Several participants pointed out that they have limited control where spills can occur, for example, when waste is delivered in unsafe and unsuitable containers, or when there is vandalism on site.
However, they acknowledged they remain liable for these incidents, so appropriate measures should be taken to prevent them.
Some of the practical solutions noted in the report include; implementing correct environmental management systems, providing staff training, and having adequate supplies of equipment to prevent spills while loading and unloading vehicles.
The BSIF and EA produced 'A Spill Prevention and Control Checklist for the Waste Management Industry', which is also included in the report. It looks at assessing risks and provides simple questions as an aid to ensuring sites and employees are well equipped to prevent spills.
