SOE encourages engineers to apply for CEnv 07 March 2012
SOE (Society of Operations Engineers) is keen for suitably qualified engineering members to apply for Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) by 29 February, well before planned changes in the application process take effect from 31 March 2012.
Those who apply for CEnv before the end of this month are entitled to a SOE head office desktop review of their qualifications. Importantly, this excludes any requirement for a professional review interview, which may become mandatory following the qualification's application review.
SOE president elect Gerry Fleming and SOE honorary secretary Peter Hills have joined nearly 300 other SOE members, including the SOE president, Gary Gilby, who have applied or already registered.
"Being a Chartered Environmentalist enables those who are involved with green strategic planning, to gain access to current information regarding these issues through the Environmental Engineer forum," explains Gerry Fleming, who is IRTE (Institute of Road Transport Engineers) professional sector committee chair and fleet manager for Belfast City Council.
"As the [Belfast City Council] fleet manager and a qualified Chartered Environmentalist, I recognise that current vehicle technology is an important tool in reducing carbon footprints, by making improvements in engine efficiency and using smarter fuels," he continues.
"Engine design and management is mainly responsible for this, and Belfast City Council have introduced hybrid, electric and LPG powered vans and trucks. It has also become evident since the introduction of the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence in Environmental Driving, that driver training is also having an impact on safer and efficient practices," he adds.
"The benefits of being a Chartered Environmentalist have enabled me to study sustainability to create a better understanding of environmental issues – which has been useful in both my home life and in the work I do for the SOE" comments Peter Hills, SOE honorary secretary & trustee board member (retired), formally technical training manager at Allianz Engineering.
"At home, I am designing a renovation and rebuild of a Grade II listed property with green energy sources at its heart. Being focused on environmental aspects has helped me better understand the applications to this project, and the cost savings and benefits to ourselves and the environment this brings," he continues.
"For SOE, I have been active in assessing over 110 individual applications for Chartered Environmentalist. It is good to give back the experience gained over many years in the profession."
The Society for the Environment (SocEnv), which is responsible for awarding the title, explains that CEnvs come from no single profession, but operate across all sectors. Worldwide, there are now some 6,000 environmental professionals with CEnv status, which denotes knowledge, proven experience and a commitment to sustainable best practice. The CEnv qualification offers SOE members a clear post nominal that recognises professional knowledge in this area.
