SK Engineering chills out on quiet chiller plant 11 April 2014
Kent-based plastics manufacturer SK Engineering says that AB Systems solved problems with an unreliable and noisy cooling tower – installing an intelligent, two-stage system in a matter of hours.
The solution started with a temporary hire chiller to meet the plant's immediate needs, followed by a bespoke, long-term solution to drive up plant performance and efficiency.
The Whitstable plant's existing cooling system, which was nearing the end of its service life, comprised a cooling tower near the residential side of the industrial estate.
SK Engineering managing director Simon Kinnaird explains that not only was it becoming increasingly uneconomical to run, with mounting maintenance and water treatment costs, but noise levels were rising unacceptably.
"AB Systems acted extremely quickly. They were on site to assess our requirements within 24 hours and provided a solution almost overnight. The speed of their service meant that we didn't have to stop production at all," says Kinnaird.
AB Systems recommended a Nova Friggo RC 120 air-condensed chiller with a pump tank module for the project. The chiller has radial fans rather than the axial fans, so enabling ductwork to be connected.
The result, says Kinnaird, was an economical solution to noise reduction. In addition, the pump and tank module allows the system to be easily expanded in the future.
