Siemens low voltage motor scrappage scheme launched 14 July 2011

From 1 August to 31 December 2011, Siemens Industry Automation & Drive Technologies (IA&DT) will be running a motor scrappage scheme to cut the additional cost to users of the EU MEPS (European Minimum Energy Performance Standard) scheme, which came into force on 16 June.

The new legislation covers most two-, four- and six-pole three-phase induction motors in the power range 0.75—375kW. It prevents the manufacture and sale of standard electric motors at IE 1 (formerly Eff2 on the superseded voluntary CEMEP scheme), now forcing users to buy a minimum of IE2 (Eff1).

IE1 (standard efficiency) motors may no longer be purchased, unless they are already on the market – meaning stocked for sale or spares by vendors or plant operators respectively.

Andrew Peters, divisional director for Drive Technologies at Siemens IA&DT, says that the company has launched the scheme to mitigate the impact of the increased cost of purchasing new IE2 motors.

All customers can claim a fixed allowance per kW rating of the motor against any LV motors, from any manufacturer, through Siemens' nationwide network of partners, if they purchase a new Siemens IE2 motor from a partner, he explains. The partner will then collect the scrap motor.

Rates range form £10 cash back for a 1.5kW motor, up to £700 for a 315kW unit.

"We are offering this opportunity for all new and existing customers, and hope that, combined with the Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme, it provides an opportunity for them to replace inefficient motors while reducing the payback period," comments Peters.

"Electric motors are responsible for up to 70% of energy used in industry, so it is clear that replacing the most inefficient motors can achieve tangible savings for our customers," he adds.
