Sainsbury’s chooses GE LEDs for external lighting 26 April 2012
Sainsbury's has specified GE Lighting's LED external fittings, branded Area Lighter as part of its carbon reduction commitment.
Following trials, the fittings will be installed to light car parks across all new build and store extensions, and Sainsbury's says it expects to make "a significant energy saving", as well as extending lighting life, compared to traditional HPS equivalents.
"The switch to LED technology very much underpins Sainsbury's commitment to be leaders in the UK for environmental innovation," states Harold Allen, electrical engineering manager at Sainsbury's.
"By working with GE Lighting we've been able to set a specification that has no requirement for an increase in lighting columns or luminaire heads, provides better light quality and uses significantly less energy," he continues.
"This, in addition to an increase in service life, and the interchangeable light source optimises cost of ownership and, crucially, delivers a quick payback," he says.
The shift from HPS to LED also sees a move away from yellow ambient light to bright white light, meaning Sainsbury's car parks will now benefit from enhanced security and appearance.
In addition, the Area Lighter's modular optical ring design produces superior vertical illuminance, delivering the required amount of light without wasteful light spill into neighbouring areas.
