REACH regulations see new guidance for smaller plants 07 May 2014
UKCSF (UK Chemicals Stakeholder Forum) has published new advice on the EU's REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) regulations.
UKCSF says that the guidance has been produced for smaller plants, as the complexity of REACH means that these face significant challenges in achieving compliance.
The organisation also believes that awareness of the authorisation aspect of REACH is low, particularly amongst "downstream users of chemicals" – companies using chemicals in their products and processes.
The guidance explains how businesses will be affected by authorisation, providing answers to frequently asked questions around the process.
Examples include: where to find information on how to substitute chemicals; what the key steps and processes are; how to monitor what's going on.
The document also includes links to relevant guidance from industry, the UK REACH Competent Authority and ECHA.
Authorisation is one of the REACH processes for managing the risks of certain hazardous substances and promoting their replacement with safer alternatives.
Substances that are subject to authorisation may not be used in the EU unless a company has been authorised to do so – meaning that they are eventually phased out of non-essential uses.
