South West Water joins supplier carbon reduction programme10 February 2011
South West Water has joined seven other major utilities in supplier qualification framework firm Achilles' carbon reduction programme, to help reduce emissions throughout its supply chain.
The other members are Anglian Water, CE Electric, E.On, National Grid, Northumbrian Water, Scottish and Southern Energy and United Utilities – all of which have adopted a common approach to working with their suppliers.
South West Water recently achieved the CEMARS standard and ISO14064 Part 1 accreditation for its own organisational carbon footprint through the CEMARS (Certified Emissions Measurement And Reduction Scheme) standard.
"Incorporating a carbon focus in our work with the supply chain will further what we are doing to align suppliers with our sustainability goals, which are central to our overall procurement strategy," says Mike Davies, procurement manager at South West Water.
"Working with Achilles on the carbon reduction programme will help us to meet our goal of operating with the best suppliers whose forward-thinking approach to sustainability gives us the reassurance that their environmental risks are minimised," he explains.
South West Water has now contacted 50 of its main suppliers, through Achilles, to assess their approaches to managing emissions and compliance.
