Disc couplings chosen for largest gas turbine plant 05 May 2010
Bibby Turboflex HS disc couplings have been selected for operation on the largest (64MW) aero derivative gas turbine engine ever packaged.
The firm points to its couplings' high torque, reliability and zero maintenance as key to their selection for this project, which is to provide electrical power while also driving centrifugal compressors for LPG gas compression.
Bibby says its HS couplings are manufactured to API671 standards, and are produced from fully traceable alloy steel. For this application, the couplings drive in friction, rather than shear, to the disc assembly joint. This eliminates the potential for fretting during normal operation, and prolongs the life of the coupling.
The HS series is rated for maximum continuous torques from 0.62kNm to 446kNm, and speeds from 50,000 rpm to 5,500 rpm in standard configurations. They are plug-in units designed for easy installation and maintenance – with disc packs being changed without disturbing adjacent machinery.
