Pipework protected on RRS Sir David Attenborough08 November 2019
Leeds-based corrosion protection and engineering services specialist Corroserve has completed a contract to corrosion protect the internal surfaces of seawater pipe spools and slip on flanges used on RRS Sir David Attenborough.
The advanced polar research vessel was commissioned by the National Environment Research Council, built by Merseyside-based shipbuilder Cammell Laird and is operated by British Antarctic Survey.
Seawater is piped throughout the vessel for cooling, cleaning, ballasting, fire-fighting and by distillation as a source of fresh water for boiler feed water.
Corroserve first abrasive blast cleaned all the internal surfaces to provide the required surface profile. This was followed by the application of multiple coats of Corroglass 600 system – spray applied using the Agmec internal pipe spraying equipment to achieve a DFT of 1250μm.
Corroglass 600 Series is a glass flake coating system that is said to provide excellent protection against corrosion in immersed and non-immersed locations. It is resistant to seawater, acids, solvents and demineralised water, according to Corroserve.
The contract was completed on schedule with the preparation and application aimed at ensuring that corrosion attack will be minimised and the pipe spools will be maintenance free and in service for years to come.
