Lister is the environment health & safety security & quality director at Nuclear Waste Services (NWS).
A BEM is typically awarded for a recipient’s sustained commitment to their local community or work that has made a major impact. Lister has been a member of the Duddon and Furness rescue team for 28 years and he has worked in the nuclear sector since 1991.
Speaking of his award, he said: “I’m really surprised and delighted. I’m accepting the honour on behalf of all the like-minded people I’ve worked with in Health and Safety across the sites, and in mountain rescue as well.
“I’m proud of our safety record at NWS and it’s a real team effort. My role is really to make sure we have competent professionals in place to support and advise the business and to ensure leadership remain focused on safety as a priority. It’s the wider team that then delivers the safety performance and I have been lucky enough to work with some fantastic teams.”
He first joined the nuclear sector as a graduate recruit in health physics at Sellafield in 1991 and his early career was in radiation protection and safety management on the Sellafield site. In 2022, Lister was appointed to lead the environment health & safety security & quality directorate at NWS.
NWS is part of the NDA group, which has a mission to safely, securely and sustainably decommission the UK’s oldest nuclear sites, leaving them ready for their next use.
Lister has also served his community as a member of Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team in Cumbria for the past 28 years, including seven years as Chair up to 2024.
