Next SOE chief executive revealed, as Jones retires 13 May 2013

The Society of Operations Engineers (SOE) has today (Monday 13 May 2013) named Peter Walsh as its next chief executive.

SOE says Walsh will be responsible for leading the membership organisation – which includes IPlantE (the Institution of Plant Engineers) and BES (the Bureau of Engineer Surveyors) – and "promoting the advancement of engineering and supporting engineering professionals".

Taking the place of the retiring CEO Nick Jones, Walsh is a chartered engineer and chartered environmentalist, and is presently employed as a senior project manager for GBM Minerals Engineering Consultants.

He will join SOE at the beginning of July before taking on his new role in August.

"I am very proud to call myself an engineer, and am passionate about the recognition of engineering as a profession," states Walsh.

"I look forward to engaging with SOE members to increase their participation in the society's activities, and make membership of the institution as relevant for engineers as possible," he continues.

"I want to see the SOE thrive and grow as a professional engineering institution as we enter this next phase of our life, and I am very pleased to be able to help drive this growth."

"SOE is pleased to welcome Peter as a valuable addition to the organisation," comments outgoing Jones. "I am confident that he will use his wealth of experience and passion for professional development to the great benefit of the Society and its members."

Walsh is a fellow of SOE and its IPlantE professional sector. He has extensive experience in facilities management, power generation and mineral processing industries. He also holds qualifications in business administration and law, being admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales in 2008.

The Australian has a BSc in mathematics and computer science, and a BEng in electrical engineering from the University of Queensland. From the same institute, he received a graduate diploma of legal practice, law, in 2003.

As well as positions in the legal world, Walsh was operations manager and commercial manager at oil and gas engineering company Clough for nearly four years.
