New oil cargo vessels relies on electrical generation 15 April 2010
Oil giant Petrobras reports success with the first of a new generation of cargo vessels, built by Wilson Sons UltraTug Offshore.
The vessel, PSV Petrel, uses diesel-electric propulsion, making it less polluting, as well as more powerful and manoeuvrable.
Weg supplied the 1,500kW main under-body propulsion motors, as well as two 600kW bow thruster motors, four 1,100kW generators coupled to the diesel groups that supply the vessel, and two dry transformers, along with electrical switchboards, and the automation system for energy management.
All are connected to Weg electrical switchboards, where the energy and alarm management systems look after operation and security.
The PSV Petrel underwent its naming ceremony in January 2009 in Rio de Janeiro. Costing around $25 million, it is transports up to 3,000 tons of cargo.
The vessel is the latest in a list of marine projects undertaken by Weg that most recently includes Petrobras- 53, one of largest floating oil platforms in the world. That platform uses Weg HV electric motors, inverters and generators.
