Maintenance now a piece of cake on Welsh Water pumps 05 October 2010
As part of a drive to cut maintenance downtime, Welsh Water has installed an EZstrip cake pump at its sewage treatment works in Cardigan, West Wales.
This is a progressing cavity pump with a difference, from framework supplier NOV Mono. The unit can be stripped down and rebuilt in just 15 minutes, without disconnecting it or removing any pipework.
Jonathon Kelly, project engineer at Welsh Water, explains that the unit has been installed to transfer 22—28% sludge cake from the site's centrifuge dewatering process to a storage skip for removal.
"I am pleased to say that the new EZstrip cake pump is performing well and the operations team are very happy with it," says Kelly.
"The installation will ensure continuous reliability of the sludge treatment plant on site and reduce potential plant downtime, allowing sludge to be processed with a reduced risk to wastewater compliance," he adds.
Not only does the new pump feature simple screw connection for the feed chamber – for easy removal of blockages, and quick disconnection of the rotor assembly from the screw conveyor, for access to the rotor and stator.
It also features a large auger inlet and screw conveyor which can be extended to the compression area, to help push sludge cake into the cavities of the rotor and stator and provide consistent pumping.
