iPad, iPhone and Facebook challenge leads Royal Navy recruitment 26 April 2011
The Royal Navy has launched an interactive challenge played across iPad, iPhone and Facebook apps, aimed at recruiting undergraduates.
The Navy says it is looking to strengthen its ranks by recruiting undergraduates into weapon, marine and air engineer officer roles, and is now using an updated version of the Royal Navy Engineer Officer Challenge for potential recruits to start their application process.
Available via the iTunes app store and on Facebook, would-be recruits face five challenges, all designed to test their decision-making skills under pressure.
Players complete missions above and below the waves on board a Type 45 destroyer, and in one of its flagship Astute Nuclear Submarines.
In one mission, entitled Submarine Propulsion, the player assumes the role of a Lieutenant Engineer Officer in a nuclear submarine, who must avert the crisis facing the sub's propulsion plant.
Captain Mike Davis-Marks says it's a tough challenge, which aims to give players a taste for the real thing – and they can share scores on Facebook with friends.
"We need qualified, skilled and intuitive graduates, with an ability to think on their feet and solve problems quickly and creatively," says Davis-Marks.
"The Royal Navy Engineer Office Challenge is an immersive and involving way for undergraduates to explore the challenges and rewards of career as an Engineer Officer in the Royal Navy."
