IOGP: Third of work-related fatalities linked to transport 22 September 2022

The International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) database revealed that seven land-transportation fatalities reported in 2021 represent 35% of all work-related fatalities.

This insight is part of an analysis of the motor vehicle crash data for 2008-2021. The IOGP started collecting this information in addition to motor vehicle fatality data from member companies globally since 2000. The IOGP provides an annual motor vehicle crash data report that includes trend analysis, benchmarking, and the identification of areas on which efforts should be focused to bring about improvements in land transportation safety performance.

Other findings from motor vehicle crash data from 2008-2021 confirmed land transportation-related incidents account for 22% of all work-related fatalities reported to IOGP since 2000, with a significant reduction in the number of land transportation-related fatalities and motor vehicle crashes (MVC) since 2008.

In addition, 869 MVC involving a rollover were reported since 2012, 125 of which resulted in a fatality or lost workday case (LWDC).

The data also showed that not wearing a seatbelt is the main reason for fatalities in MVCs, while diver fatigue is a serious problem that results in many of these crashes.

Broader results from 2000-2021 revealed that 365 work-related land transport fatalities associated with 323 fatal incidents have been reported to the main IOGP safety performance indicators database. Of these fatalities, 21 resulted from assaults or violent acts.
