IECEx certified service key to explosive environment’ (Ex) machines 18 February 2013

Specialist IECEx machines repairer Quartzelec is reminding plant engineers of the importance of using IECEx certified service workshops to carry out repairs on Ex (explosive environment) machines.

The firm is technical presentations across the UK, highlighting the responsibilities of equipment owners and operators, because it has found that some operators don't have the procedures to identify, monitor, inspect or overhaul the equipment.

The worry, according to Matt Brown, who runs Quartzelec's Grimsby and Sheffield operations, is that plant operators cutting back on maintenance don't fully appreciate the requirements, so may unknowingly use uncertified technicians or repair facilities.

"There are no second chances when it comes to servicing with Ex equipment," warns Brown. "Even inadvertently cutting corners may lead to catastrophic and costly occurrences."

The first presentations, held recently in Grimsby's Heritage Centre, was attended by engineers from companies operating in the water, petroleum, gas, chemical and related sectors attended.
