HVCA becomes B&ES on 1 March 2012 06 February 2012
The Heating and Ventilating Contractors' Association (HVCA) is changing its name, and from 1 March will be known as the Building & Engineering Services Association (B&ES).
The HVCA, established in 1904 as the National Association of Master Heating and Domestic Engineers, adopted the HVCA name in 1963.
"Back then, that's exactly how the majority of the members would have described themselves – as H&V contractors," comments Bob Shelley, president of HVCA.
"These days, however, things are very different [and] the term H&V barely scratches the surface of the diverse, sophisticated and complex nature of the work our members now undertake," he continues.
"Nor does it even hint at the increasingly central role they play in the integration of engineering services in buildings – and especially in the incorporation of the renewable technologies that are clearly here to stay in our increasingly environmentally-conscious age."
Shelley also makes the point that today's HVCA membership includes other specialisations, including ventilation hygiene, heat pumps and facilities management – all of which, he says, sit comfortably under the 'building and engineering services' identity.
"Rebranding is just one element in a re-positioning exercise that will enable this association to provide its members with a wider range of services, enhance its influence with government, and provide a natural home for all building engineering services specialists," asserts Shelley.
