HSE highlights Legionella risks during the coronavirus pandemic28 September 2020

In facilities that have been closed or had reduced staffing during the COVID-19 pandemic, water can stagnate due to lack of use, increasing the risks of Legionnaires’ disease, warns the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

It notes that employers, the self-employed and people in control of premises, such as landlords, have a duty to protect people by identifying and controlling risks associated with legionella.

They should review their risk assessment and manage the Legionella risks when they reinstate a water system or start using it again, or restart some types of air conditioning units that have a source of water that generate aerosol. By contrast, small wall or ceiling-mounted units with closed cooling systems should not present a risk, it adds.

If the water system is still used regularly, maintain the appropriate measures to prevent legionella growth.

Control methods include high temperatures, biocides and other chemicals, mechanical methods and pipework replacement.
