Free software slashes pump maintenance for Severn Trent05 February 2010

Severn Trent Water reports savings of up to œ2,400 a week on pump maintenance, since upgrading its control software - and for zero cost.

The plant had installed four submersible foul pumps at its sewage treatment works in Worcester, driven by 132kW ABB drives.

However, after commissioning, Severn Trent experienced blockages, caused by rags sticking to the pump impellers, resulting in downtime, expensive removal and maintenance - as well as the risk of sewage pollution.

ABB suggested using the anti-jam module on its Intelligent Pump Control software - which performs rapid forward and reverse cleaning cycles. Since installation, there have been no further blockages and no downtime.
