Free e-book highlights the value of engineers24 October 2013

An e-book about how engineers help meet society's challenges can be downloaded for free tomorrow (25 October).

The Inter-Disciplinary Applied Ethics Centre at the University of Leeds has published 'Engineering in Society' in partnership with the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE) and five of the UK's largest professional engineering institutions.

It is aimed primarily at undergraduate students beginning their degree programmes.

The RAE said: "Students often have misconceptions about a career in engineering. They might not realise that engineering is as much about people as technology, and that a good engineer has skills in communication, negotiation and personal judgement.

"The purpose of Engineering in Society is to give students new to engineering an initial insight into the profession of engineering and some idea of the exciting challenges that their future career might bring."

The book comprises 10 chapters, each written by an expert in the field, and includes the experiences of young engineers working on current global challenges as well as retelling the experience of engineers with a lifetime of experience in dealing with the practical ethical challenges of engineering.
