Flir turns to test and measurement: points to new IR future 13 March 2014
Declaring that Flir thermal imaging cameras are increasingly treated as tools of the trade by maintenance technicians and service engineers, the firm has broaden its scope to include related tools – and looks set to go one further.
Initially offering six Flir branded test and measurement products but making no secret of its intention to grow rapidly in the coming months, the firm says it will make technicians' lives easier and more efficient.
Three electrical meters are in this first release. All have large LCD displays and dual-LED work lights to illuminate dimly lit work areas. Importantly, they include Bluetooth connectivity to Android mobile devices running the latest Flir Tools Mobile app.
They also connect wirelessly to Meterlink-enabled Flir thermal imaging cameras so that electrical readings can be embedded into IR images in real time.
Electrical meters initially on offer are: a rugged digital multimeter with variable frequency drive (VFD) filtering; a power clamp meter with power analysis and VFD filtering for testing three-phase systems and VFD-controlled equipment; and a multi-function clamp meter, combining a true RMS multimeter and clamp meter with a non-contact IR thermometer and Type K thermocouple.
Others include: a compact, non-contact voltage detector; a moisture meter featuring a pinless sensor and an external pin probe; and an industrial videoscope.
What's next: within the next few weeks, Flir is promising a thermal imaging camera attachment for iPhones – and it's safe to predict that within 18 months we'll see thermal cameras built into the test and measurement instruments.
We're looking at a new world of point and click.
