Energy agenda must move from compliance to conservation 11 July 2011
It's time for plant managers to shift their energy-saving agenda focus from mere compliance to proactive energy conservation.
That's the message from EnergyTeam, which insists that succumbing to compliance fatigue will end up costing plant's money while polluting the planet.
EnergyTeam director Brian Rickerby says there is a growing risk that UK businesses that have been spending thousands of pounds on complying with energy legislation, such as the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC), are becoming disenchanted and will disengage with the spirit of the energy conservation agenda.
"Businesses are now showing signs of compliance fatigue, but the best advice for firms of all sizes is that now is a good time to be laying the foundations of energy efficiency," he insists.
Among problems cited by Rickerby are that the requirement for air conditioning equipment to be inspected and certificated "is being widely ignored, because the perceived costs of commissioning and inspection outweigh the potential fine for non-compliance".
"The deluge of rules and regulations has come to be seen as a burden on businesses, when the original intention was always to encourage energy conservation and efficiency and, in so doing, actually save them money," warns Rickerby.
