Emerson reduces complexity in safety instrumented systems08 June 2012
Emerson Process Management claims to have transformed safety system installation by combining the performance and reliability of its DeltaV safety instrumented system (SIS) with the flexibility and space savings of its electronic marshalling technology.
Keith Bellville, product manager for the DeltaV SIS, says that this new offering greatly simplifies design, installation, wiring and commissioning, while also increasing capacity and reducing footprint.
"This new architecture addresses the project challenges we hear about from customers," states Bellville.
"They wanted the best of both worlds – DeltaV SIS characteristics of integrated yet separate safety, compliance with IEC standards, and field device diagnostics, and with the capabilities they saw in our CHARM [characterisation module] technology for process control," he continues.
"The result is a more flexible, easier-to-install, higher capacity system. Furthermore, the overall footprint requirements for the solution are far less than other safety systems in the market."
The new DeltaV SIS architecture includes the CHARM smart logic solver (CSLS) that runs all safety logic and new CHARM signal conditioners that replace I/O connections to the logic solver terminal block. Also included are a local safety network (LSN) that communicates between 16 CSLSs and the SZ controller, which communicates between the LSN and the basic process control system control network.
