Di-Spark opts for Atlas Copco eco-efficient VSD+ compressor 22 October 2013
Precision engineering firm Di-Spark is reporting a 15% energy saving from trials of a vertical GA15VSD+ rotary screw compressor, powered by Atlas Copco's permanent magnet motor technology, which exceeds IE4 efficiency.
The energy savings gained during the trial (one of 25 at major Atlas Copco application sites), plus the unit's small footprint, have now persuaded Di-Spark to install the compressor as a permanent addition to the air supply at both of its sites in Horndean, Hampshire.
Di-Sparks' plants now have five Atlas Copco compressors, three of which are VSD (variable speed drive) type, all providing compressed air to the palnts' advanced manufacturing equipment, which includes five-axis milling, multi task mill-turn, wire erosion and spark erosion EDM machines.
According to Di-Sparks' David Light, its plants has already achieved more than 35% energy saving from its existing Atlas Copco VSD compressors. With the trial compressor adding a further 15% reduction in energy consumption, it is now seeing a 50% improvement over fixed-speed compressors.
"We have always invested in high-performance, high-productivity machine tools... So we had no hesitation in accepting [Atlas Copco's] request to trial their latest development, the GAVSD+ compressor," says Light.
"We are delighted with the outcome. As a result, not only are we saving an additional 15% on our energy consumption, but this vertical design compressor occupies less workshop space than conventional machines and is surprisingly quiet."
