Control Techniques Drives for Italian crane refurbishment 22 May 2012
Digital dc drives and associated equipment, from Control Techniques, have been installed in the latest phase of crane upgrades in La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT) in northern Italy.
The latest project involves a ship-to-shore (STS) gantry crane, manufactured by Italian crane firm MGM OMG.
Emerson Control Techniques Italy replaced all medium voltage electrical equipment, low-voltage auxiliaries, drives, the controlling PLC and the crane management system.
It also replaced the dc hoist motors with new units from sister company Leroy Somer.
The new drive system provides for rapid container handling, as well as fast and precise crane positioning to maximise crane productivity.
Control Techniques was awarded the contract in part for its ability to provide technical support and preventative maintenance facilities.
Hoisting, trolley, boom and gantry movements are now driven by dc motors, controlled by Mentor MP digital drives connected via a Profibus network to an S7-300 PLC.
Over the last eight years, Emerson Control Techniques has been responsible for the electrical refurbishment of 10 STS cranes, eight rail-mounted gantry cranes (RMGs), four rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) and one mobile harbour crane (MHC) at La Spezia.
