Operator SSE Thermal says that the plant will introduce a first-of-a-kind high-efficiency gas-fired turbine that will achieve 63% efficiency.
According to NS Energy, that is a 50Hz version of Siemens HL-class SGT-9000HL gas turbine; other plant includes associated boilers and a single exhaust stack, one condensing steam turbine unit, and a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG).
In addition, the station with the ability to reach full power in just 30 minutes, it will also provide important flexibility for the electricity system, complementing the increasing amounts of renewable generation on the grid.
SSE reported that in March 2020, through the UK’s Capacity Auction process, the station secured a 15-year capacity agreement at a de-rated capacity of 803.7MW.
Siemens Energy is the principal contractor delivering the power station, with specialist HVAC company Exyte Hargreaves supporting the delivery of mechanical and electrical/HVAC within five buildings on the site. BGES has been appointed to design the building management systems, which will be commissioned in spring 2021.
Adrian Woodhead, project lead at Exyte Hargreaves said: “Our delivery build methodology incorporates the use of our MMC Offsite Assembly Facility to supply horizontal modules, vertical risers and a prefabricated plant room, housing the centric energy centre and heating distribution for the whole facility.”
Commercial operation of Keadby 2 is scheduled for 2022 as coal power plant closures come into effect.
