Babcock Wanson boiler kicks off Viridor AD plant 14 August 2014
Recycling, renewable energy and waste management specialist Viridor has installed a Babcock Wanson HEB 1050 hot water boiler at its anaerobic digestion plant at Walpole, near Bridgwater, Somerset.
The containerised boiler, which kicks off the digestion process by circulating hot water, has done its job and is now in standby mode, should the CHP (combined heat and power) system require maintenance or supplementary heating.
The Walpole AD plant will process up to 30,000 tonnes of food waste per year and is expected to save Somerset council tax payers £200,000 a year.
Gas from the plant will be used initially to generate electricity – about 9,500 MWh a year – with nearly 80% exported to the National Grid, enough to power more than 1,700 homes.
In addition to converting the waste into biogas, the plant is also producing a nutrient-rich digestate for use on local farms as a fertilizer and soil improver.
Babcock Wanson's HEB Boiler is a forced-circulation, fully automatic packaged unit, designed for high efficiency and long working life.
The reverse flame design is claimed to optimise furnace loading while the radial firetube assembly minimises material stresses.
A reversible front door allows quick access for inspection of the combustion chamber and tubes without the need to remove the burner.
