Ascendant tests show Asco filter regulators speed ESD response 14 June 2013
Valve automation specialist Ascendant Technologies has selected filter regulators from Asco Numatics to help improve its valves response performance.
By implementing the firm's 342 Series filter regulators, which were designed for high flow rate, Ascendant, which serves the UK oil and gas sector, says it can offer significantly reduced valve closure times.
Andy McDuff, general manager, Ascendant Technologies, makes the point that filter regulator flow rates play an important part in valve closeure rates.
"We tested a number of filter regulators from different suppliers and the Asco device outperformed its rivals, helping to significantly reduce the valve closing time," he says, indicating that performance tests showed a reduction in valve closure time from 11.7 to seven seconds.
The reason, according to Asco Numatics, is that its half inch stainless steel filter regulators incorporate moulded reinforced diaphragms, which enable a flow rate up to 4,430 l/min.
For ESD (emergency shut-down) applications, that's an important differentiator. What's more, if a filter regulator is unable to pass enough air to enable the actuator to close a valve in a specified time, a booster may need to be fitted. This adds to the cost and increases the number of potential leak points.
