Activity Visualisation brings the gaming software to plant planning 12 September 2013
AVEVA has launched Activity Visualisation Platform – software built on industrial gaming technology designed to enable efficient facility familiarisation, staff training, construction planning and simulation, and operations and maintenance planning.
Derek Middlemas, COO and head of enterprise solutions at AVEVA, says the system will also help with the rehearsal of safety and schedule-critical activities, without putting personnel or the plant at risk.
The system helps plant managers to create immersive, interactive multi-user plant environments, generating realistic simulations direct from 3D design models – even before the physical plant has been built, he explains.
And with operator error recognised as the leading cause of safety incidents, he believes this will help owner operators and engineering contractors (EPCs) to train staff, so enhancing plant operational safety, and reducing costs and risk.
"People learn best by doing and providing effective training is a vital aspect of plant operation," comments Middlemas.
"AVEVA AVP enables users to practise anything, from the simplest inspection walk-around to the most complex maintenance, safely in a realistically simulated live plant environment."
Operations staff can now learn and practise tasks in safety before going onsite, instead of having to do so for the first time in a potentially dangerous environment, he says --- adding that the oil and gas, power and process plant industries will be among primary users, since they already make extensive use of 3D models.
