Aberdeen Royal Infirmary cuts energy cost by 15% with EasiHeat 03 August 2011

Switching its domestic hot water and heating from shell-and-tube calorifiers to EasiHeat systems, from Spirax Sarco, has delivered energy savings of at least 15% at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Aberdeen Royal Infirmary's estates officer Trevor Stirton says that replacing the hospital's ageing calorifiers has also saved up to three weeks of maintenance each year, since the old systems had to be stripped down for insurance inspections.

"We made the decision to change because one of the calorifiers was nearing 55 years old," he explains. "They were high maintenance and we knew that modern systems would be more energy efficient.

"We don't have the new systems metered for steam consumption so we can't say exactly what they're saving, but it is estimated to be up to 15% overall for the heating and domestic hot water applications we have replaced."

Stirton explains that EasiHeat systems use compact plate heat exchangers to provide hot water on demand, so eliminating the requirement for hot water storage and consequent heat losses.

"We can't afford to run out of hot water, so in one area alone we used to store 2,100 gallons of hot water, 24/7," states Stirton. Removing hot water storage, he says, also saves space and helps eliminate problems with Legionella pneumophila contamination.
