ABB wins Environmental Contribution of the Year Award 25 March 2013

ABB has won the Environmental Contribution of the Year award at the Pump Industry Awards for a pump control system, developed with partner Halcyon Drives, that is saving £68,000 a year on energy costs for Tata Steel.

The Tata Steel plant in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, produces speciality steels for the aerospace, oil and gas, power generation and industrial bearings sectors.

During production, hot steel billets are cut by a gas cutter, generating scrap material that flakes off the billet. Three 90 kW flume flush pumps are used to flush water across the billet to carry this scrap away.

While in production, two flume flush pumps run continuously, with scrap filtered out of the water, which is returned to the process via a holding (clear well) tank by two 75kW filter feed pumps.

All these pumps were originally driven by motors running direct-on-line, with no speed control, so Halcyon Drives supplied, installed and commissioned three, 90kW and two 75kW ABB IP55 drives to enable speed control for the pumps.

The drives, which provide for intelligent, multi-pump control, now ensure that the optimum number of pumps is running to meet the process demand. They also bring a backup pump online in the event of a pump failure.

"Winning this award shows the strength of ABB and its partners, continuing to provide the services and solutions that help companies make major reductions in their environmental impact," states Neil Ritchie, local business unit manager, drives and controls at ABB.
