ABB launches drives and motors swappage scheme 24 May 2010
ABB has launched what it's calling a drives and motors 'swappage' scheme, allowing companies to trade in their old products from any manufacturer for new ABB drives and motors.
Steve Ruddell, division manager for ABB's discrete automation and motion business, explains that the scheme offers at least 17.5% discount off published list prices for new drives from 0.12kW to 400kW and new motors from 0.75kW to 710kW – and adds that a new drive alone can save as much as £1,000 per year in energy.
"The scheme is launched to coincide with the recent introduction of the government's CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme and aims to give organisations an additional incentive to meet their carbon dioxide reduction commitment," he says.
Plants that take advantage of the swappage scheme will also benefit from improved energy efficiency and reduced maintenance downtime, says Ruddell, helping to further reduce costs.
ABB is also offering a free, no obligation on-site energy appraisal to identify areas of plant capable of yielding the greatest return through motor and drive upgrades. And Ruddell confirms that ABB partners will offer help and advice with interest-free loan applications and Enhanced Capital Allowances through the Carbon Trust.
"The reliability of well maintained drives gradually declines once they get to between 15 and 20 years of age," asserts Ruddell. "To avoid costly downtime towards the end of the product's life, our scheme identifies the older drives, gives advice on the installation issues and recommends a drive replacement programme."
Ruddell also makes the point that plant engineers normally replace drives in a breakdown situation, because spares are either unavailable or the repair is too expensive.
"Users can reap a number of other benefits from renewing their drives," he Ruddell says. "The higher efficiency of new drives instantly saves money, as the losses are reduced by at least 10%. Furthermore, reduced size saves plant room space; lower component count improves reliability; and more up to date technology means additional features, such as enhanced energy savings and improved communications."
