3M webinar covers safety with occupational asthmagens 23 September 2011
3M is to host a free webinar on workplace hazards posed by occupational asthmagens, on Tuesday 22 November at 12 noon, as part of its 'safety spotlight' series.
Alan McArthur of 3M's Safety Solutions explains that 3M launched its safety spotlight series to share knowledge and expertise on a variety of workplace issues and hazards.
This webinar will provide an insight into the different types of occupational asthmagens – including substances such as flour, isocyanates and wood dust – that can exist in a range of industries.
McArthur says it will also focus on how to select respiratory protective equipment (RPE), relevant risk factors and control measures that health and safety managers can put in place for their workforces.
"Occupational asthmagens are a potential hazard in many working environments," states McArthur. "For instance, isocyanates, often found in two-pack paints, are the number one cause of occupational asthma in the UK.
"Unlike pre-existing asthma, occupational asthma can often be cured, if detected early, and it is therefore crucial to recognise what the risk factors are and how they can be safeguarded against."
As well as explaining the various types of RPE available and advising on how to select the most appropriate form of protection, the webinar will direct viewers to the most relevant sections of HSE guidance on occupational asthmagens, to help ensure they are fully informed.
To register for the webinar, go to www.3M.co.uk/ohes/speakerseries. All you need to join is a telephone and Internet access. The technical bulletin will be available to download during November by visiting www.3M.co.uk/safetyspotlights.
