For well over 10 years now, I have supported the Engineering Council at membership and registration level of several professional engineering institutions, as a volunteer. I have observed and reported registration activities and how they align with their current licence. This has entailed reviewing and commenting upon their guidance documentation, assessment process and interviewing practices, concurring – or sometimes not – with their decisions and recommendations. This has provided me valuable insight into best practices for awarding licences and the handling of applications for registration at all levels, to the benefit of SOE or other institutions.
Over the last year, I have represented the SOE on the main board, alongside sitting on the privy council and governance panel and most recently chairing the Professional Registration in a Foreign Language working group. It’s a wide range of subjects to consider, and would be most daunting without the excellent support and guidance of fellow trustees as well as capable and experienced Engineering Council staff. I am often reminded that the purpose of the Council is purely regulatory, to ensure that individuals and national bodies are adhering to their licencing agreements.
Acutely aware of the ever-changing and evolving nature of engineering, the Council carries out work to maintain existing and develop new standards and specifications for current and future registration and licencing activities. A case in point is competence standards for engineers working on high-risk buildings following the recommendations from the Grenfell Tower disaster, when the Engineering Council joined the Industry Response Group’s Competence Steering Group (CSG).
I encourage anyone interested in supporting the SOE’s activities in professional development to contact our membership and professional registration panel.
