My history with the SOE goes back many years and I was President of the SOE Hong Kong Region from 2008 to 2009 and then, Honorary President from 2010 to 2011. I also obtained the Honorary Fellowship from SOE UK and IPlantE in 2009.
In terms of my career, I started out as a graduate trainee in the Hongkong Electric Company (HEC) from 1978 to 1980, working on the North Point Power Station and Ap Lei Chau Power Station.
I was then promoted to electrical engineer and senior electrical engineer and involved with design, erection, and commissioning of Lamma Power Station with a capacity of 3,800 MW. In 2002, I became the manager of Lamma, leading a team of professional staff, including senior engineers of civil, mechanical, and electrical disciplines.
In 2014, I left the HEC to spend more time with my family and took up professorships in various universities including the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, City University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Metropolitan University, to help to nurture potential engineering professionals, something that is close to my heart.
Today, I participate in professional bodies in Hong Kong, the UK & mainland China and I sit on various government boards and committees. This includes as chairman of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) – Control, Automation and Instrumentation Division (CAD) Control, Automation & Instrumentation (CA) Division. We are organising a Summit at Hong Kong Metropolitan University on 13 May 2025.
For my professional qualifications, I obtained the Chartered Engineer designation in 1984, the Registered Professional Engineer designation in 1986, the HKIE Fellowship in five disciplines (building services; control; automation & instrumentation; electrical; energy and environmental) in 1995, the IEE Fellowship in 1996, the Chartered Environmentalist designation in 2012 and the Senior Engineer (Professor Level) designation from China in 2023.
