Hearing from leaders in their chosen professions – through an engaging panel discussion – those present soon identified a common thread: how important it is when embarking on a career journey to use a mentor. It was therefore encouraging to learn of another recent SOE initiative designed to provide a mentoring programme.
The proposal was announced at the Safety and Resilience in Engineering Awards, which were held on the 17 of October at the Think Tank – part of the Birmingham Science Museum. I would encourage everyone to give some consideration to supporting this programme. Being a mentor is very rewarding and provides valuable personal development – not only for the mentor, but also the mentee. For more information visit the SOE website.
Another way of developing oneself is through volunteering. There are currently opportunities within the BES and IPlantE to join the professional sector committee. The commitment is usually for a three-year term and there is the chance to shape the direction of the BES and contribute towards industry guidance and CPD initiatives. Those involved can also help ensure pathways are maintained, within each sector at all levels. If you feel you can contribute, visit the SOE website and complete the application form.
Volunteering and mentoring are also valuable experiences that will count towards professional registration. If you are a member of the SOE, why not take that next step and get registered? Again, visit the website and start the ball rolling. Strangely I would recommend getting a mentor!
Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the awards, but I am reliably informed that it was a great afternoon. Thanks to all the team at the SOE for staging the event – the venue, I am told, is something special. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone who was nominated for an award and, of course, particularly those who won. Especially Peter Jacobs, who picked up the prize for Engineer Surveyor of the Year.
Finally I would like to send congratulations from the BES professional sector committee to Ian McDonnald on being awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the SOE – for services to the society. You see – there are rewards for volunteering!
